Perennial humid summers and everything else that comes along with them make-up the inspiration of Singaporean fashion designer Michelle Chan’s collections for her WEEKEND SUNDRIES label. Based in Singapore, the Architecture Studies and Fine Arts student turned fashion designer has built up a name for timeless silhouettes and witty detailing. With the new ‘Midnight Garden’ FW2013 collection available from July, Chan tells Travelshopa about her background, design philosophy as well as the inspiration behind her collections.
Please tell us a little about your journey to staring your own label..
After graduating from Brown University with a double degree in Architectural Studies & Fine Arts in printmaking, I went on to graduate school at The Barlett UCL in London and The London College of Fashion where I focused on pattern making and draping, as well as textile printing techniques. From there I established a design studio and the natural next step was to launch my own label. My debut collection was released in 2012.
What is the WEEKEND SUNDRIES look about?
WEEKEND SUNDRIES is tailored towards the notion of respite; the weekend! My focus is very much around longevity, comfort and effortlessness. My collections are intentionally very laid back – just like the weekend should be – suited for smart casual meets work and play.
Which three words describe the WEEKEND SUNDRIES woman?
She’s confident, modern and down-to-earth. She has an appreciation of details and juggles this with her existing wardrobe.
What’s behind your SS13 collection, titled ‘Play Flight’?
Our current collection, ‘Play Flight’, is spring/summer 2013. It is extremely feminine and speaks effortless style, keeping in line with the philosophy behind the label. The collection incorporates Japanese cottons and silks with a neutral palette. I have played with a number of patterns and prints as well. It features quality fabrics offering versatile yet distinctive wardrobe essentials.
What’s next for WEEKEND SUNDRIES?
Our next collection is fall/winter 2013 and is titled, ‘Midnight Garden’. It consists of timeless pieces that can be mixed and matched to fall right into place. I have worked with a range of blue hues complimented by monochromatic neutrals, with a few statement pieces featuring an original damask print. This collection will be available from July 2013.
