Tiong Bahru: 7 must-see shops in Singapore’s most eclectic local shopping spot

tiongbahru copyThe 10th Heritage Trail by the Singapore’s National Heritage Board is Tiong Bahru; one of Singapore’s most happening areas. Historically, the area was developed as a massive housing estate of over 900 units in the 1930s. While today most of the apartment blocks have preserved the Art Deco architecture; inside the spacious apartments have been restored into trendy homes, offices and shops.

With dozens of new businesses flocking to the area, Tiong Bahru is shaping up to be one of Singapore’s most eclectic and hippest spots. Numerous cafes, bars and restaurants have opened, making the where to eat and drink list long (and growing). The local market (83 Seng Poh Rd) takes our prize as one of the cleanest and freshest on the island; and remains to be one of our favourite places to get well-priced fresh flowers! And the number of boutique hotels is on the rise. In addition, with Tiong Bahru MRT station, Tan Boon Liat Building and Great World City all within walking distance, one really doesn’t need another excuse to visit this area.

However, resident or tourist, we strongly suggest you check out the local shopping scene in Tiong Bahru. With most shops opening late morning, set aside an afternoon to meander from shop to shop, as they are all within minutes from each other. You will be in awe of the uniqueness, diversity and quality of pieces. More often than not you will find the owners in store, be greeted with a smile and welcome to stay as long as you like – you’ll feel right at home in Tiong Bahru.
